Samenvatting

From Hu Jintao to Xi Jinping, the Chinese leadership has shown a significant change of communication approach that aims to form a more assertive diplomacy discourse. Compared to Hu’s period, under Xi’s leadership, the official media fully embraced social media platforms to reach the broadest audience possible. To study how China’s major official media outlet, Xinhua News Agency, interacts with social media, this chapter examines the measures Xinhua has taken to promote China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) through digital channels. As an important part of Chinese diplomacy, on the one hand, the BRI shows that the Chinese government is calling for a greater role in international relations; on the other hand, its establishment has caused contentions from within and outside China. Following the working steps of critical discourse analysis, this chapter examines the Chinese state media’s communicative strategies in the context of a transitional leadership.
