Abstract
This study empirically examines the position of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert in news media coverage. An expert is characterised by specialised knowledge, extensive experience, and recognised competence in a specific domain. Experts exert a strong influence over the news agenda, with news media often utilising AI experts in their stories, thereby co-shaping the public discourse on this technology. Based on a content analysis of media coverage of AI by five Dutch legacy newspapers from 1950 to 2024, this study examines the use and presentation of AI experts in news coverage and analyses their claims. Preliminary results highlight a shift in the types of expert sources used by the media outlets, as well as their nationality and gender. By specifically observing expert actors as sources of news creation on the topic of AI, this working paper complements an already wide range of studies focusing on expert sources in news studies publications.
