The future of Software Engineering (Education)

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentationScientific

Description

At Fontys UAS we have been educating software engineers for many years. Since 2019, we also educate AI engineers: software engineers that know how to build production-ready AI systems. Recently, we saw a whole new combination of AI and software engineering: using LLM-based tooling to automate the software engineering process itself. We quickly adapted by adding new semesters to our curriculum, starting employee professionalization programs, building necessary infrastructure, but most of all by starting experiments. At the same time, we do practice-oriented research on how to build trustworthy (Gen)AI systems, with the help of LLM-based tools. We make use of existing literature/knowledge on AI and Software Engineering (both SE4AI and AI4SE), but also of the practical projects and questions of our industry partners. Each semester our students work on the current and future questions from the organizations around us. Thereby giving us a direct link to what is going on in industry with AI and GenAI. We learn together with our students how to educate the AI-augmented AI engineer of the future. In this presentation we would like to share our vision on software engineering in the age of AI, the job of a (Gen)AI engineer and what this means for software engineering education. We will share our insights, the lessons we are learning, and the open questions for future work.
